Rats in History

________________

Title:

Fur Rat

Creator/Contributor:

Joan Brown -- United States, 1938-1990

Date:

1962

Contributing Institution:

Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive

Gift of the artist Like other artists of San Francisco's Beat movement, Brown's work of the late 1950s and early 1960s incorporates everyday materials assembled into new and provocative forms.

"'Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we will die' is the attitude which was prevalent at the time," said Brown. "There was a rebellion against the slicker materials [and] a delight taken in using rattier materials. The rattier the better."

Here, Brown has covered a wooden armature with fur from an old fur coat to depict an oversized rat with a menacing tail-an image from one of her dreams.

Cross Team Sharing - using Calisphere resources

These are some ideas to get you thinking about the informal sharing with other Calisphere teams.

Use this wiki space to jot down notes for each team member.

Use the questions as a guideline and be prepared to BRIEFLY share your answers to one or two questions ONLY  (time limit of 3 minutes)

  1. What did you explore or experiment with? Spent lots of time cruising through the pictures, searching for topics, searches for teachers (not too many photos of photographers), looked at the hand-outs and how to use them, looked at lesson plans, looked at the background of photos and documents, how to cite, talked Calisphere up with teachers and students and demonstrated
  2. How did it work? iPod touch very popular with elementary students, students and teachers interested and enthusiastic about what's available on Calisphere, there's so much there, so much information, you can really find yourself getting immersed
  3. What is something cool you found on your own? Kris - I found KKK pictures that were horrifying and the Civil Rights Movement in California, Christina - Miwok Indians dancing in Yosemite, Caroline - discovered disasters during The Gold Rush
  4. What were the challenges you encountered? sometimes key word searches don't work or are cumbersome, overwhelming amount of information
  5. What is something you still want to do?
  6. What advice do you have for others... Just jump in!
