Treasure Hunt Activity Results

CONTENT: These murals show community murals. The murals themselves contain many interesting images. The graffiti style writing on the top and bottom of one of the murals says, "It takes a village to raise a child". There is a depiction of a Latino youth shaking hands with an African American youth and possibly helping each other to climb a mountain. There is an African American man playing a drum in the center of the mural. There is a colorful mandala-like image in the upper right corner of the mural. The other building is immersed in a mural that contain many cultural and symbolic cultural images.
CITATION: Precita Eyes Murals, Sunnydale California, 2004, Directed by Fred Alvarado and Joshua Stevenson with youth and neighbors of Sunnydale. Image taken from http://www.precitaeyes.org/youthmurals.html
CONTEXT: This images are taken from an urban setting in the San Francisco Bay Area we think and from a San Diego market. The murals appear to be in a lower socioeconomic settings. In the Bay Area location, it appears that the African American and Hispanic peoples of the neighborhood have brought their cultural information to bear in this mural. The San Diego mural conveys more traditional Latino cultural symbols. The San Diego mural has since been destroyed.
CONNECTIONS: Youth need to play a part in creating their neighborhood to have a sense of ownership of their environment. A community benefits from having community created art, especially when it represents aspects of the people's own culture.
COMMUNICATION: There is considerable social connections in the murals. This murals are probably inspired by an African American point of view and a Latino point of view. The colorful scenery conveys hopeful, maybe joy, through color and their messages.
CONCLUSION: In this location, it appears that the people of the neighborhood have brought their cultural information to bear in this mural. The phrase, "It takes of village to raise a child" is inspired by the traditions and cultures of Africa as portrayed in an African proverb. We believe that this mural is a great example of how cultures can thrive in an urban environment when they work together to celebrate culture. And, too, it is so important for youth of any culture to be involved in adding to their neighborhood.

Cross Team Sharing - using Calisphere resources
Michael presented the Calisphere website to staff at a staff meeting. The teachers thought it was cool and useful, but it is not known if the teachers have implemented it or not.
Both Sheridan and Michael explored how to actually use the itouch. We were able to download and sync music, photos, and outlook contacts to our itouches. We also explored creating ppt presentations and downloading to the itouch. We struggled with correctly numbering the ppt slides and still have questions regarding this. We also explored the logistics on how to connect the TV to the itouch.
Something cool that Sheridan found on her own: a wonderful photo regarding a memorial at the border...students were touched and curious. Michael shared the itouch with the students and they are excited to see it in action.
Something we still want to do is be successful at downloading and presenting ppt presentations and implementing the technology into the curriculum. We both want to learn how to blend music in with our presentations, and bring in music and video.
Advice for others: don't be afraid to explore, ask colleagues for help, invest the time that it takes to learn new technology, don't be intimidated!
These are some ideas to get you thinking about the informal sharing with other Calisphere teams.
Use this wiki space to jot down notes for each team member.
Use the questions as a guideline and be prepared to BRIEFLY share your answers to one or two questions ONLY (time limit of 3 minutes)
- What did you explore or experiment with?
- How did it work?
- What is something cool you found on your own?
- What were the challenges you encountered?
- What is something you still want to do?
- What advice do you have for others...

Marin County Community School
1) After session one, Sheridan Gold and Michael DeFrancesco gave a presentation to staff at our school site. During the presentation, we showed the staff the Calisphere website and demonstrated some of its uses. Also, we created a a "wiki" page for a school and demonstrated it at the staff meeting.
2) After session two, Sheridan and Michael plan on sharing the 6-C's with the staff as well as some practical uses of the i-pod touch. We hope to play a power point presentation with sound. We will also inform the school that we have received an audio recording device which can be used by both teachers and students to record audio. If there is interest, we may hold a small session demonstration of how to add audio to a power point presentation using the new audio recording device. We foresee time management issues as being possible challenges to this process. We will need to find common planning time to make this happen.
2) Tom Laughlin is at a separate school site (Braun Day Treatment Program). He will be sharing the information he learned at the Calisphere training with his staff.
